Our Story

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Des Plaines was founded on August 13, 1871, shortly after the town was incorporated. Key milestones include building their early property at Lee and Thacker streets, joining the Missouri Synod in 1892, and constructing their current modernist building in 1956.

Early Years and Location

  • 1871 Foundation: Formed on August 13, taking over property at Lee and Thacker streets from the disbanded St. Stephen's congregation.
  • Early Facilities: Included a church, school, parsonage, and a small pioneer cemetery (relocated to Rand Road in 1875).
  • Parish School: Operated a long-standing elementary school that served the local community for generations. 

Modern Development

  • 1892 Affiliation: Officially joined the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.
  • 1956 Construction: Broke ground on the current modernist building located at 855 Lee Street.
  • 1994 Expansion: Added Faith Hall as a multi-purpose wing to support community ministries.
